: A sparkling collection of old and new pop songs from a daring, experimental anime soundtrack composer.
Yuki Kajiura slipped in under the radar of most anime fans. She began her musical career back in 1992, but didn't break into the world of anime soundtracks until 1996, where she provided music for the unmemorable second Kimagure Orange Road
movie. She showcased her skills for a few other projects-- notably, Blood: The Last Vampire
and the live-action theatrical Boogiepop Phantom film-- but didn't shoot to prominence until 2001, when Noir
was released and pretty much everyone dropped what they were doing to groove to her experimental pop hooks.
is Kajiura's first solo album, but it's really a collection of singles from some of her other works,
along with some new material. There are tracks from Noir, .hack//SIGN,
and Aquarian Age
included, but the rest isn't soundtrack material. Despite that, most of the music has a pretty unified sound to it-- Kajiura's not afraid to experiment, but certain things, like heavy string arrangements and the use of relatively unusual instruments like accordions and uilleann pipes, rear their heads repeatedly throughout the disc.
Kajiura's musical style is an interesting one. To oversimpifly, I'd characterize most of her work on this disc as a successful marriage of old-world choral and classical methods to new-wave pop arrangements. She favors dense, heavily-layered vocals, and makes almost constant use of string arrangements, all laid over a thick, pounding bassline and a thrumming, usually electronic drumbeat. The effect is a surprisingly pleasing one, yielding fascinating, baroque-sounding songs that also sport a slightly acidic pop edge.
The album goes right to work with the first track, "Key of the Twilight," which happens to be my favorite piece from the .hack//SIGN
soundtrack. The song's substantially layered vocals, delicate string arrangement, pulsing drum and bass mix, and insistent, pleading vocals make it an early standout. In fact, there's a sense of urgency, of pleading, to a lot of Kajiura's songs on this disc. In the album's title track, her lyrics (which she writes, in English, herself) reflect on her life, and wish for better things. "Fiction" is followed by "Vanity", a gentle, lilting waltz.
The best song on the disc is "Canta per Me", a surging, anthemic number in Italian. Music like this is what really makes Kajiura stand out-- Deb Lyons' soaring vocals and Kajiura's delicate string composition, along with a meaty accordion sound, make this an absolutely fantastic piece of music. This is followed immediately by "Zodiacal Sign", a fast-paced electronic number that breaks up the slower tempo of its surrounding songs well. "Awaking" features slow, dreamy vocals laid over a hypnotic drumbeat-- the vocal stylings in this song, in particular, almost invoke comparisons to Bulgarian choral singing, and favorable ones at that.
"Open Your Heart" is another interesting number, with warm, contralto vocal harmonies and a soaring uilleann pipe solo. (Never heard uilleann pipes? Yes you have! They're a Celtic variant on highland bagpipes; they get a lot of usage in current Celtic music, despite their relative rarity.) In fact, the only thing keeping Fiction
from being a nearly perfect album is "Salva Nos", the final track. It's not bad-- quite the contrary, it's just about as intriguing as the rest of the material on the disc. The trouble is, its heady mixture of drum machines and operatic vocals just doesn't sit well in the context of the rest of the music. It's an interesting experiment and makes for good BGM, but with its slightly dissonant harmonies, it's also a really harsh listen. Hearing this song at the end of all of the other good stuff is akin to slugging down a strong shot of straight whiskey after a nice meal. It's good, but it still kind of ruins the aftertaste.
Still, Kajiura's really proven her mettle with this album. She has a very highly developed style, and it's one that serves both composer and listener very well. If you love experimental pop in the vein of the Eurythmics or Depeche Mode and can handle a heavier choral presence, this disc is worth a listen; if you've fallen in love with Kajiura's work courtesy of Noir
, this disc is essential, because it contains more of the same elements that made these soundtracks so interesting. It's also worth noting that his disc is actually hitting American shores before its release in Japan, a highly intriguing indication that Japanese performers and publishers are beginning to take the American market very, very seriously. For Fiction
, that's a good thing-- it's musical dynamite.
